[Accessory Analysis] Bandai Tamashii Nations Metal Build 1/100 Strike Freedom Gundam Wings of Light Option Set

Bandai and Tamashii Nations have been doing some fabulous work with the Metal Build line of high-end collectible figurines, releasing model after model that always receive considerable reception and a corresponding spike in business profits. Seeking to further monetize this revenue stream, the creators have also released Option Sets to enhance the base Metal Build, whether it is in the form of additional weapons, armor or just a few pieces of well-crafted plastic.

The Wings of Light Option Set for the Metal Build Strike Freedom Gundam falls squarely into that last category. For S$133, you get four pieces of beautifully made wings of light and some clear plastic pieces to hold the Super Dragoons. You also get a nicely illustrated box sleeve to hold the boxes of both the Option Set and Strike Freedom Gundam together, and that box sleeve is supposed to complement the box sleeve of the Destiny Gundam's Option Set that will be released in due course. For such a hefty price tag, the perceived value seems to be lacking somewhat, but the sales figures for this Option Set suggests otherwise. If there is a surefire way to siphon money from otakus, it is to sell them limited edition shiny stuff (I'm no exception).

Price considerations aside, the Option Set completes the entire Metal Build Strike Freedom experience. Somehow, it makes the Strike Freedom even more awesome that it already is, and that is saying a lot. Assembly of the wing units are fairly easy, although the sharp points can really do a number on your hands/face if you're not careful enough. The clear plastic display pieces for the Super Dragoons feel flimsy when handling but are actually pretty tough and can take a significant amount of punishment without snapping. You will be thankful for this when posing the Super Dragoons.

Once the Wings of Light have been fitted on, you wouldn't want to remove them again (partly also due to the hassle of dismantling everything). They are just so gorgeous: edgy, shiny and full of badassery, like a Messiah to the battlefield. You will need substantial space to display the Strike Freedom Gundam with the full glory of its Wings though, my photobooth measuring 50cm all around could barely contain the entire contraption, and certain poses had the wing tips stabbing the photobooth's walls.

I'll leave you with pictures of the Wings, if you're feeling generous or rich, you can consider getting a set!
