[Kit Insight] Bandai BB Senshi SD Knight Unicorn Gundam (Painted Build)

As with most Unicorn Gundam model kits, this one can also transform!

I don't really build SD kits that much simply because I prefer HG 1/144s for their size and proportions, but I actually started Gunpla with an old school SD RX-78-2 Gundam, a kit that I still keep to this day (although it has yellowed substantially). Therefore, SDs occupy a special place in my heart and psyche.

With all the sale events happening in Singapore over the past couple of months, I managed to snag a few model kits for cheap, SDs included. This particular SD kit cost me S$10, a huge discount over its retail price of S$21.95. Realising that I hardly paint up my SD kits, I decided to do up the Knight Gundam Unicorn to complement the glittery green psychoframe as well as the gold-plated parts.

SD kits are fun in that they are quick to build: parts come off easily and require minimal effort to prep for painting and eventual assembly. Sticking to its original colour scheme, I chose to add dashes of grey here and there to complement the white and green while also making use of the gold foil stickers to enhance its look. The full list of colours used is as follows:

  1. Anchor Pearl White
  2. Anchor Violet Blue
  3. Anchor Sparkling Black
  4. RedWheel Matt Black
  5. Tamiya Metallic Black
  6. Tamiya Light Gun Metal
  7. Red Fox Primer Grey
  8. Nippon Pylox Matt White Grey
  9. Nippon Pylox Flash Gold
  10. Bosny Silver Chrome
This SD Knight Unicorn Gundam is pretty good for a SD kit, featuring multiple parts for the majority of its armour. It even manages to incorporate a very simple but admirable transformation gimmick into the kit which works very well. By simply moving panels and switching positions, the SD Knight Unicorn Gundam can shift effortlessly from Masked Mode (Unicorn Mode) to Unmasked Mode (DESTROY Mode) with very little part-swapping. The visor-style helmet for the head is exceptionally impressive.

The kit actually has one more mode in its True Form, which essentially is just the reversing of the shoulder armours' orientation and switching of the V-Fin into a pretty ornate one. Not exactly a bonus but still cool none the less, considering that this V-Fin looks pretty dang awesome.

As an SD kit, don't expect a lot of articulation, although the arms do allow for some nice poses to be struck. Accessories-wise, you get a Magnum Sword as the only weapon accompanied by two open holding hands, one open hand and one hand holding a card (it's a Cardass in-universe thing) for you to do Yu-Gi-Oh memes.

Overall, this SD kit looks great after a little paint and I actually prefer it in its Masked Mode!
