Shiver me timbers!
The Metal Build 1/100 Crossbone Gundam X1 is really a gorgeous product, easily one of the best offerings in a product line rife with splendid and beautiful mobile suit designs.
In keeping with Metal Build reimaginations of classic mobile suits, the Crossbone Gundam X1 is de-miniaturised in a manner akin to the Metal Build Gundam F91, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Metal Build Strike Gundam. I'm not complaining, it's always good to get more product for the price paid and I always found the model kits of miniaturised mobile suits to be puny (I'm looking at you, MG 1/100 Gundam F91 Ver. 2.0).
A lot of gold is also used on the Metal Build version of the X1, lavished generously all over the outer armour as well as inner workings of the suit. The gold brings about a regal feel to the X1, elevating it from a mere workhorse unit to an admiral of the fleet, as it should be. The whole admiral look and feel is taken one step further if you take the time to mount the cloth-based Anti-Beam Cloak, although it takes substantial effort to get the cloak on.
The die-cast joints on my set of the Metal Build 1/100 Crossbone Gundam X1 are exceptionally tight, many magnitudes tougher to rotate as compared to previous Metal Build releases. This is a happy problem to have although some elbow grease is needed to move the X1 into dynamic poses. But can this thing hold its poses!
The X1 comes with a whole ship's arsenal of weapons and accessories, including a robot parrot that is unique to the Metal Build version of the Crossbone Gundam X1. Ostensibly functioning as an automated drone and unmanned scout unit, the brightly coloured parrot takes the X1's pirate motif further: what's missing is a hook-hand and a peg leg since the set already includes a second non-expanding head with an eye patch. The Core Fighter itself is a work of art, featuring a nose section that folds down for docking procedures.
Now I'm afraid of the Metal Build Crossbone Gundam X2.
