[Gunplanerd] 2019 in Review

Despite my increasing life-related responsibilities, I still managed to churn out builds!

2019 has been a demanding year, to say the least, with more adult-ing in the way of enjoying the hobby. More often than that, I would come home, look at my backlog and go "maybe another time", before moving off to do something else that is more mindless. It's also getting increasingly difficult to find sufficient gaps of time to build, with many different issues constantly vying for my time and attention.

Sometime in the middle of 2019, I decided to not be so hard on myself: Gunpla must always be a hobby, something that energises me instead of being a draining, hollow endeavour. The moment a hobby becomes something akin to work, it will be time to shut the entire thing down. That's just the sad reality.

Therefore, the lesser number of completed builds this year bear testament to this new ideal hobby framework, which has been working well so far.

In 2019, I completed 40 builds, broken down as follows:
  • Straight Builds - 9
  • Light Builds - 3
  • Painted Builds - 14
  • Customised Builds - 14
Evidently, painted builds are still my favourite, although I oddly completed the same number of Customised Builds in the same year.

I broke new grounds this year with two particular builds: the HGUC 1/144 RX-98 Manticore and the Bandai HGBD 1/144 AGE-IIMG-SV Gundam AGE-II Magnum SV (Coronation Ver.), both Customised Builds. The Manticore represented my foray into experimenting with different textural treatments for a single model kit, similar to Metal Build figures (my poison) while Starscream was my maiden attempt in melding universes. To be honest, I'm pretty proud of these two builds as they are a true attesting to how far I have come since my first painted build.

I hope I will be able to continue building next year but I will definitely continue sharing news and release information for the betterment of the community!
